With his father barely in the ground and his sister married to a scheming bastard, Carter is on the verge of losing the family ranch. His only chance at holding onto his inheritance is to get his cattle to market before his brother-in-law. That means braving Mason Canyon, which on top of being snake-infested and easily flooded, is also shifter territory. Most clans would just as soon shoot humans as look at them.
His only hope of making it is to trust the shifter who's agreed to help him, and pray that Rani won't double-cross him. If Carter doesn't go he loses everything, and if he doesn't make it there his family is as good as dead.

Review written for Love Bytes Reviews.Carter is at the end of his rope; his father is dead, his sister has married one of the worst men around and he’s going to lose control of his father’s ranch if he can’t come up with a miracle. When he’s given a glimmer of hope in the form of Rani, a shifter, Carter can’t help but take the chance that everything will turn out alright. Time and the elements are against them, however, and if Carter’s going to save his livelihood, he’s going to have to trust in someone other than himself.
This story was a lot different than I originally thought it would be but I also thought it worked really well. Carter is a rancher from the top of his head to the soles of his boots and all he wants is to keep the ranch his father worked so hard to build out of the hands of his new brother in law. Everything seems to be working against him until a deal is reached with a local shifter pack for protection for himself and his herd as they travel to the upcoming cattle fair. Rani is stiff and formal in the beginning but as the two travel together, he begins to loosen up showing more of his personality. These two main characters really couldn’t be more different yet I didn’t have any trouble picturing them together. I found Rani to be quite sweet once he opened up a little and it was nice seeing Carter let someone else be in charge for once. The story itself was actually pretty well paced and it felt complete even for such a short read. I really wish I’d been able to see what happened after the cattle sale, however; an epilogue would’ve tied the beginning with the end better and I really wanted to see what happened when they got home. I can’t tell you how much I wanted to find out what happened with Percy. This was a nice change of pace from the usual shifter story and I enjoyed it.

I enjoyed this quick Western read, which manages to pack in a fair amount in such a short space, though some aspects definitely remain mysterious and unexplained.
In this alternative world, there is no United States of America, instead there are territories and dukedoms and other such regional differences, split up and held at bay by shifters (and possibly native tribes. I think they might have been mentioned somewhere, but not in the area this book is set). Beyond the basics of humans carving out what territory they can from what the shifters have lost or will allow them to have, there isn’t really any world building done. Which is fair enough for a short novella, but it might leave you with a few questions and wanting more.
Carter interacts with three shifters in the book – the half-shifter worker he’s known all his life, the new chief of the local tribe, and Rani, his aloof guide – and since this is told entirely from Carter’s viewpoint, I was also left wishing he’d learned a little more about shifters and shifter society.
However, I did enjoy this story. I liked Carter and sympathized with his need to get out of the house. He could have been sullen and miserable throughout the trek, but instead he’s a good guy, who is friendly and keeps trying to get Rani to open up. Rani isn’t the easiest character to get to know, but I did like how the two of them slowly warmed to each other and how it becomes clear that Rani definitely feels more than he shows.
If I’m honest the ending was a bit too open for my liking, without any real indications of where everything would go from that moment, but I liked what came before and Rani’s shifter-self was different and unexpected (well, I had my suspicions but thought they were wrong because of not expecting to see that animal there).
So overall this is good. If you’re looking for an M/M Western with a different kind of approach, this could be it. I’d like to see more from these two and this world.
(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.)
4.5 Stars
I really enjoyed this story though the beginning was a little bit confusing for me. The Paranormal aspect of the story are the shifters. They are known to the human world but not really accepted. When Carter needs to move his cattle FAST in order to sell them before everyone else does (in a better price) he has no other chance but to take a shifter guide and hope for the best, it's not only Rani he doesn't like or trust it's also the rain which could flood the way and kill the cattle AND the venomous gigantic snakes. YIKES!
I enjoyed the relationship buildup. There was something underneath the surface for both of them (though we only got Carter's POV). The journey they had to go through kept me on edge, with the dangerous terrain and unpredictable weather. Rani "changed" along the way, he needed time before he could be comfortable with Carter. Carter on the other hand did his best to try and be friendly with Rani but in the end, Rani was there for him more than he could ever dream, he not only saved his life he also cared for him.
There's a sad note to the story considering the reasons for this haste journey. I felt sorry for Carter but I admit I was also confused with some of the terms. I think I got it in the end, what he planned on doing and why, but I WAS frustrated that I didn't get his motives for his actions. This is the only reason I'm reducing my rating in ½ star because all in all it was a great short novella that contained a believable romance even though Rani and Carter still has a long way to go, alone and together.
