Gay bookseller and reluctant amateur sleuth Adrien English's writing career is suddenly taking off. His first novel, Murder Will Out, has been optioned by notorious Hollywood actor Paul Kane.

But when murder makes an appearance at a dinner party, who should be called in but Adrien's former lover, handsome closeted detective Jake Riordan, now a Lieutenant with LAPD -- which may just drive Adrien's new boyfriend, sexy UCLA professor Guy Snowden, to commit a murder of his own.

Death of a Pirate King The Adrien English Mysteries Book 4 edition by Josh Lanyon Literature Fiction eBooks

I’m not sure why I actually bought book four as I was not all that impressed with books 1-3...the need to finish what I started I guess. Or masochism. But this book was actually better than the first three and not quite as irritating. Adrien is still annoying and I still don’t really like him but I like Jake much better in this book.

This book takes place two years after the end of book three and several things have happened in that span that alter the course of the storyline and allow the author to dig Jake out of the hole he was in more smoothly than I would have thought possible. You can see what’s coming down the pike early on here.

There is better character building here and better story arc construction. The mystery is more intriguing and more in line with Lanyon’s more recent work which I had read first and very much enjoyed.

Pet peeve? The British slang...Adrien is a California boy. He wouldn’t say “in hospital” or “flat” or several other words or phrases. It’s bothered me the whole series. There are also some research flaws, especially given that the book avoids giving a time setting. Copyright date isn’t clear as the books have obviously been re-released...no one was using a Palm Pilot any longer in 2017, or 2011 for that matter. HIPPA laws have been around since before then as well. This lack of editing is irritating and takes my head out of the story which is a cardinal sin for me.

Death of a Pirate King The Adrien English Mysteries Book 4 edition by Josh Lanyon Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I should have written a review after I finished each book, but since I didn't, this is a review of the entire series (no spoilers)

I love this entire series. In all earnestness. It is so clever, so funny, so unique, so beautiful, just the best...probably my favorite series of all time. Josh Lanyon is probably also my favorite author because no matter how short or long the story he spins is, you always become invested in its outcome and enjoy its duration. Adrien and Jake...wow...I just love those two with all my heart. Even when I was pissed off at one or both. There's five books, and so much goes on between Jake and Adrien, and outside of them, that the story is so hard at times, spans years, and works through a lot of obstacles, but you enjoy every second of it. The mysteries are so well written, that you really have no idea who done it until Adrien knows (and I usually can guess beforehand with other authors). The characters are all so distinctive and unique and colorful that you react to them on way or another.

Things never turn out how you think, some parts pain your heart, sometimes you're sitting there yelling at the book and waving your arms around, sometimes you are tearing up, sometimes you are laughing until your abs hurt, sometimes you are hoping so hard it consumes your head, and sometimes you are smiling so hard and wide and so happily that you feel all warm inside. And through it all, you won't be able to get Adrien and Jake out of your head (nor will you want to). I don't quite hold all other books to these because I know none will stand up to them, but they easily take the cake. I really can't say enough about or fully describe the intricacies of Lanyon's writing or how he just sunk a hole in one with this series, I can only urge you with all of my heart to read it, and I will buy all of them in paperback (I have them now on kindle) to reread sometime soon. Plus I still have the interactive sixth book to enjoy! So, potential reader, the bottom line is that Adrien and Jake and their mysteries will worm their way into your heart, and will never get out, so just read, enjoy, and cherish.

P.S. After you read "The Dark Tide" (the fifth book), read the interview Josh Lanyon did answering lingering questions about the end of the series (or more accurately, clearing up a few things and "checking in" with the characters about their life sixth months after the conclusion of the series).
It's a sign of the good writing that I came to this series for the romance and stayed for the mysteries. Or maybe I'm staying for Adrien. He's such a well-drawn character, and wrote, so consistently presented. The man is brilliant, fiercely loyal, and engages so honestly with the people he cares about (and the vast majority of people he doesn't). I have not loved Jake. I have not wanted Jake for Adrien. Jake has not been worthy of him. If the books hadn't been as good as they are, I'd have just gone back to waiting for the next Art of Murder book, but this book was the best yet, and it deserves all the accolades. The ending...well, it did something to my heart, too. Kudos.
